Personal Licence Exam Tips
Remember, it’s only natural to feel a bit nervous when doing an exam. This can actually help, as it increases adrenalin levels – and gives us clearer focus. However, nervousness can be reduced by being prepared. So read our tips below to give you the best possible advantage!
What to expect
- Yes, it is a bit like being back at school!
- The exam has 40 questions – each with 4 multiple choice answers
- 28 correct answers are required, to pass the exam
- You have 40 minutes to complete the exam
- Everyone has to sit 4 feet apart and face the front of the room
- You need appropriate identification to sit the exam (don’t forget that, or you won’t be able to even get started!)
- You should be able to see a clock and details of the exam start and end times
- You are not allowed to refer to any materials or your phone!
- There is no talking during the exam
- You cannot remove your exam papers from the room or take copies
- The invigilator cannot discuss the content of the questions but can provide you with a new pencil or pencil sharpener! Just stick up your hand.
And don’t worry! – your Inn-Dispensable tutor will go through all of this with you prior to the exam and make sure it is all clear.
If you have English as a second language, or dyslexia
- You may be entitled to an additional 10 minutes over the usual 40 minute exam time
- It may be possible to organise somebody to read out the exam content to you. Obviously they can’t help with the answers!
- You may use a paper dictionary
The main thing again is not to worry, but to discuss this in advance with our friendly head office team who can make the suitable arrangements.
Tips For Successfully Completing This Exam
- Read each question carefully before you look at the answers – don’t rush.
- Come up with the answer in your head before looking at all the possible options – so that the choices given don’t throw you off.
- Read all of the choices properly before choosing your answer.
- Eliminate all of the answers which you know to be incorrect.
- If two choices overlap, or mean essentially the same thing, both are probably incorrect.
- If you don’t know the answer to a question move on to the next question and make a mental note to come back to it later.
- If you really can’t answer a question, take an educated guess to select an answer.
- If time allows, review all questions and answers. It’s always possible that you may have mis-read a question the first time round.
- Often, your first choice is the right one (unless you misread the question). Changing an answer because of a ‘feeling’ is often simply nervousness.
